Málaga Airport, also known as Pablo Ruiz Picasso Airport, is the main airport for the Costa del Sol of Spain. Malaga Airport is located 8 kilometers from the city centre with excellent communication links to the whole of the Costa del Sol. It is one of the oldest Spanish airports as well as being one of the original locations of the first airline founded in Spain in 1919. Malaga airport comes in forth in Spain regarding importance, handling 75 % of the passengers in Analucia. The airport has daily connections to over 20 cities in Spain, more than 60 European capitals and some African destinations. Furthermore, Málaga is one of the most popular destinations to the British who prefer this part of Spain for spending their holidays. In its short history the airport showed a stable growth in infrastructures and services due to its yearly increasing passenger traffic. Many airlines offer cheap flights to Malaga from any spot in Spain, Europe and the world. London-Gatwick is the destination with the greatest number of passengers, followed by Manchester, Dublin, London-Luton, Paris Charles De Gaulle and Brussels. Malaga Airport also has scheduled flights to the rest of Spain, most significantly to Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca. Passenger numbers have increased consistently from levels of around 6 million in 1995 to 12.8 million passengers in 2008. The airport currently operates with two terminals. A third terminal adjacent to the previous two is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in 2009. A second runway is expected to open by 2010. The Malaga airport counts with an excellent infrastructure and all necessary facilities to make the arrival as easy as possible. There are different options of transport, as you can rent a car at Malaga airport or you can take the train or bus, whose stops are very close to the terminal. The access roads to the airport are magnificent and at present, improvement works are making them even better.
